Wright Gone

Lorenzen Wright’s body was found in a wooded area in Collierville, TN by Hacks Cross Road.   There was a 911 call from Wright’s cell phone on July 19th at 1:00 AM.  When the caller was speaking with the dispatcher several gun shots rang out.  I remember back in the 90′s watching and collecting basketball cards of Lorenzen Wright hoping that one day the 6’11 big man, from the University of Memphis taken 7th overall by the Los Angeles Clippers, would rise to his potential.  Now I am saddened to learn of his death and can only think back to all the excitment I had collecting his rookie cards and watching him play.

To make it even sadder was a really good guy based on the comments people have said about him yesterday.  Wright’s former personal assistant, Wendy Wilson, ”he was a good person.  He did not deserve to die this way.  God is not pleased with this.”

Fellow Memphis star Penny Hardaway, “I cried.  The emotions hit me immediately. It’s just sad because we lost a good person and a brother.”

Michael Heisley, the Memphis Grizzlies owner, “we are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Lorenzen Wright.  We lost a member of the Grizzlies family.  Lorenzen delighted fans on the court withhis passion and off the court with his generosity in a Memphis community that watched him grow throughout his playing career …”

While I was watching and collecting those basketball cards little did I know what a good person Wright was.  Now I feel even worse about him being gone.  Rest in peace Lorenzen Wright.  Thanks for the memories and all the joy you brought to my life and others.
