2012 NBA Draft Predictions: Part 1 – Marcus Camby 2.0

Everyone is talking about Kentucky’s Anthony Davis (6’10, 220) being the number 1 pick in the 2012 NBA Draft but let’s not forget the reason Davis sounds so promising is that everyone is in love with the Reigning NBA Champion and just named Defensive Player of the Year, current New York Knick, Tyson Chandler (7’1, 240), whose game he mimics.  While I would be amiss not to mention Chandler’s game mimics former Knick and former Umass Minuteman coached by Davis’s college coach, John Calipari, Marcus Camby (6’11, 235).  A big rule of drafting is never draft someone because they look like a copy (or even a B grade version) of someone else, case in point, Randy Foye drawing comparing to Dwyane Wade years ago.

Even if Davis turns into an exact copy of Camby/Chandler don’t forget it took years for them to develop their game, put on size and find a team who knew how to use them the right way.  This was mainly having a Big Scoring Power Forward next to them so they could focus on defense, blocking shots, rebounding, slamming home put backs and alley-ops preferably with a good passer serving them up.  Years were wasted with them looking awkward, being force-fed on offense to no avail when they should have been playing to their strengths and being force-fed food not the rock.

But I got to ask why have a complimentary Big Man who will take years to develop their game, put on size and find a team who knows how to use them the right way when you can have a Star Big Man, a Big Scoring Power Forward no less, right away?

Stay tuned for 2012 NBA Draft Predictions: Part 2 coming tomorrow.
